5 DIY Projects You Can Complete On Your Own

I think we can all agree that 2020 will always have a special asterisk next to it when referencing history. What a year! Covid19 confined most of us to our homes for extended periods of time. If you’re like me those extra days and weeks sitting with myself holdup from the rest of the world invited a heightened level of scrutiny to the things around my home. I figured since I’m having to spend so much time at home that I might as well make the best of it. Here are 5 home improvements projects you can do yourself.

Update lighting: The first is replacing old light fixtures. For my project I replaced hanging track lighting with recessed canned lighting. There were no ceiling fans, so my friend and I replaced the lighting in the living room and bedrooms with ceiling fans that had nice lighting. Pendant lighting was added to my sunroom and a chandelier in the dining room. Paying attention to details was key so I also changed out all the light switch plates to add more appeal.

Kitchen Backsplash: Update your kitchen with a nice hint of color by adding a nice backsplash. This can be fun and affordable! If you are indecisive or get bored easily, another option would be vinyl peel and stick this way you don’t have to be stuck and it takes less than a day. Another option could be to just paint the wall or existing tile of the backsplash to add a pop of color. You might also consider adding beadboard its inexpensive and you don’t have to remove existing tile it can be applied on top of it. There are so many creative ways to update your backsplash, the possibilities are limitless. Tap into your creative side and get busy I am sure you will not be disappointed in the finished project

Change out Faucets : If you want to change out your faucets or they have been little leaky this is an easy project you can take on yourself. This can be in your kitchen or bathrooms since it’s such an easy project why not do both. Decide on the faucets you want and that’s a trip to your local home improvement store. This is to ensure that the replacements have the correct configuration for the replacement. Once you start make sure you shut off the water supply first and of course you need a wrench and maybe a few other tools but nothing major . If you have a garbage disposal this may be a tad bit more complicated. You can always go to YouTube for the actual steps to DIY your faucet.

Paint a small room: First choose your color, then once you have a sense of what you’re looking for, pick a few shades and get samples. I always test the shades on a wall and see how they look in the room at different times of day before I actually commit. When you are ready to start make sure you clear the room or use a drop cloth you don’t want to ruin your furniture or floors. Grab a roll of painter's tape, Remove outlet and light switch covers and apply painters tape to protect outlets and switches from paint drips. Work from the top of the room down, starting with the ceilings tackle one wall at a time. Make sure you take your time and not rush you want to allow enough time for the paint to completely dry or if additional coats of paint are needed. Trust me it will be all worth it once this color creates a brand new space.

Turn a nonessential closet into an office: Most of us are now working from home and this project has many benefits. If you are a person who never thought about working from home and there just wasn’t an available room to make an office. Why not convert a closet into an office, you can always put coats and other items under the bed or a basement just suggestion! Measure the space and think about the supplies you will need to work comfortably. Location is everything so make sure to choose a spot that works with your work style and helps you be productive and effective. If you don’t need a lot of privacy consider removing the door you can always put up nice curtains when you want to separate the space. You will need to be creative to get all the equipment you need try putting shelves up the back of the closet is an easy and obvious solution. Make sure you have plenty of light whether that’s plugging in lamp or task lights. Make the space personal and pretty, you will be spending a lot of time there.

These are a few home improvement projects that you can do without a large bill and you don’t have to hire a contractor.
