Class, taste, elegance - these and many more are reasons why red wine has gained such tremendous popularity and acceptability over the years. It is made by extracting both its color and flavor components from some grape varieties. Red wine is undoubtedly one of the most accepted delicacies in the world.
It is a common saying that red wine rules when taken alongside red meat while white wine goes with fish. But in truth, there are no rules. No, not one. Wine and food should be paired as deemed fit by you!
However, as a red wine lover, enthusiast, or explorer, there are some red wine-food combinations you want on your bucket list or 'red wine-food combo' bucket list. Even though red wine might taste very delicious with lots of food varieties, these foods are awesome delicacies when combined with a glass of wine.
1. Red meat.
Well, you guessed right. The popular saying that red wine must be taken with red meat didn't come by chance, did it? No. Beef, pork, lamb, goat, mutton, veal are examples of red meat with which red wine tastes amazing.
2. Burger.
Burgers are a great crowd-pleasing dish, especially when combined with a red wine with ripe fruit notes. These ripe fruit notes give an optimum level of acidity that makes them pair well with a juicy burger. The ripe fruit notes also give a perception of sweetness which feels great when tomato ketchup and pickles are part of the dish.
3. Cookies.
Generally, you want to pick wine and cookies that match in weight and complexity. You also want the wine to have enough acidity to counterbalance the sugar content. From Jammy cookies that pair well with Moscato D'Asti to Spicy Cookies that pair well with Rutherglen Muscat, to Nutty Cookies that pairs well with Madeira, cookies and the appropriate red wine simply makes an excellent combination.
4. Cheese.
Cheese is not exactly a very popular choice of food when combining with red wine. Mostly, people pair white wine with cheese not even considering the type of cheese available. Chevres, Asiago, Gorgonzola, Gouda are examples of cheese that combine well with red wine such as Bordeaux, Sangiovese, Port wine, and Merlot respectively.
5. Baked macaroni.
Red wines have a little tannin and the idea behind pairing them with foods like baked macaroni is that the tannin balances out the fat and salt. The bitterness of the red wine creates a complementary pairing with the fat in baked macaroni.
6. Salmon.
Most oily fishes combine well with red wine as the tannin balances out the fatty component of the oily fish to give an excellent feel and taste.
The following tips should be considered when combining red wine and other foods - more acidic wine should be paired with less acidic foods, when pairing with meat, it's better to match the wine and sauce rather than the meat, wine should be paired with food of the same flavor intensity. The wine should have the same flavor intensity as the food.
