Child rearing has its challenges, and I don't say that lightly. The last thing a loving parent wants is for their son or daughter to end up in jail, or worse. There have been countless studies to determine exactly what factors contribute towards a life of crime. While there are no solid conclusions, we do have a pretty good idea how best to counter criminality by the way in which a child is raised. This of course doesn’t paint a full picture, as there are external factors outside the home that one must consider as well. However, regardless of this fact, parents still have the most influence over a child’s experiences and how they are taught to view and interact with the greater world.
What is Positive Parenting?
This form of parenting requires that parents avoid harsh punishments as a means of making a child behave according to their liking. Positive parenting consists of listening to your child, providing feedback, appropriate rewards and being emotionally available.
How Positive Parenting Solutions Can Prevent Criminal Behavior
There are a myriad of factors that can push a child in a wayward direction. The gatekeepers of those factors discussed in this article are really all that parents need concern themselves with. This is because when a child is provided the proper foundation and guidance, the inevitable pitfalls and temptations that come with growing up will most likely not cause them to sway. While there are exceptions to the rule, they are the minority.
Over the past 20 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with thousands of kids and young adults from elementary school through college. I’ve served in the capacity of professor, mentor, life coach and speaker for dozens of high schools and colleges and served on the advisory board for Cobb County Schools CTAE program for several years. When it comes to preparing kids to become the very best version of themselves – I can’t express the importance of education, exposure and all the other areas discussed below.

The charts above paint a very clear and very interesting picture when it comes to incarceration. It doesn’t take much analysis at all to understand the impact of education, all you need to do is look at the numbers. They do not lie.
Lastly, I would like to draw your attention to the “Incarceration by Age Group” chart. The greatest number of inmates are concentrated in the middle. This is the time when most people are in their prime and most productive phase of their lives. It’s a clear sign that those who lack a proper education are working just as hard on the other side of the law to create something out of their lives. The only problem is they are, usually, more likely to choose routes of a criminal element of which eventually lands them in jail.
Conclusion
As parents, educators, and mentors our jobs are never quite done. The internet has provided a whole new level of complexity on the child rearing front, and it’s going to take a village to ensure we are raising our youth to be the very best they can be. Positive parenting solutions should be understood and practiced by anyone fortunate enough to be part of a child’s growth and development, no matter if you are biologically connected or not.
